Prepare for adventure, culture – and traffic!

Moving to a big city, especially if you’re headed there from a smaller area, can be exciting; it can also easily overwhelm you. You’ll need to not only learn where things are, but also how you’ll get there, what areas you should avoid, and how you’ll negotiate all that traffic. Here are some tips to help you keep the transition exciting instead of scary.

Learn the lay of the land

First thing’s first: you need to learn the geography of your new city, especially if it was a long distance moving scenario which had you relocate from far away. Look at some maps online and identify major landmarks and freeways so that you’ll always know what area of town you’ve wandered into depending on what you see around you.

Invest in an actual paper map to keep in your vehicle as well. Apps like Waze are great, but you can’t always guarantee that you’ll have cell phone reception or that your car’s GPS device will work properly. An old fashioned map is tried and true in the likely even that you eventually get lost.

Focus on your neighborhood first

There’s a big city to explore, but start small and get to know your immediate neighborhood first. Take the initiative to meet your neighbors and ask them for their tips on where you should explore and shop. They’ll be able to give you insights that you won’t find anywhere else.

Traffic

It’s a given that you’ll experience traffic when you move to a metropolis. Plan ahead and take note of when rush hour starts and ends and which freeways are known to be the worst regardless of the time of day. Figure out ahead of time how you can get real time traffic updates on the go as well.

Figure out how you’ll get around

In some cities, driving will be the best way to get around, while others will have efficient public transport systems. If you’ll be commuting to work, research your route and figure out if driving or riding is your best option. Look into transit passes as well, which allow you to pay one fee for an unlimited number of rides a month.

Connect with the community

Search online for local groups or Meetups and join a few. These forums will let you connect with people already living in your new city who can answer your questions and give you tips before your move, but also you’ll get an opportunity to meet likeminded folks who enjoy the same hobbies or activities as you do. Maybe its craft beer, chess, rock climbing, or entrepreneurship that turns you on; whatever it is, you are likely to find others with whom you can connect and enjoy sharing with, or networking around, such goings-on.

Get (or stay) fit

Once you’ve moved in and settled, find ways to get back into the fitness activities you enjoyed in your old town. Cities have much to offer, whether you’re a gym rat, into outdoor activities like hiking, or prefer the tranquility of yoga, you are likely to find plenty to do in the city. Get out there and take advantage of the plethora of choices a big town presents.

Find it cheaper

Cities are inherently expensive. Gas, food, and activities can all add up quickly. To avoid breaking the bank, check out the coupon sections of the local paper, and utilize mobile apps like Groupon to find great deals on everything from restaurants to spa treatments.

Also, take advantage of chains like Costco or the Dollar Store; stores unlikely to be found in smaller towns. Finally, larger cities almost always have flea markets and farmer’s markets on the weekends; not only are they fun, but you often find a bounty of bargains as well.

Be safe

Though the section of town that you’re settling in may seem relatively safe, remember that with an increased population comes a larger crime rate. Always lock your doors and windows and be aware of your surroundings while out. You don’t need to be afraid in your new city; you just need to be aware and be smart.

Living in a city can be a great adventure. Take some time to learn about it before you move, and get ready take full advantage of what living in a major metropolitan area can give you.
